I have a 17 foot center console and like to fish in close to the rocks around Cape Ann. I am considering getting a trolling motor to be a bit more stealthy, and also so that I have a backup engine aboard in the event that I chunk a propeller.

My primary engine is a 50 hp Honda All in, I think the boat weighs in at about 1000 lbs. I sometimes load it with up to 500 lbs. more, with a fat friend and a livewell full of sea water and mackeral candy.

Does anyone have any thoughts about appropriate models and how much thrust I'll need? There seem to be a lot of bells and whistles out there, such as auto pilot features on the Minn Kota models. I get more and more confused. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Finesse ,

Its funny you posted this question, I am selling mine and was about to list.
I researched this topic throughly 2 years ago and ended up with the Minn Kotta Riptide 70 lb thrust 24 volt. with Auto pilot. I have owned a few other brands and types and this by far the best in my opinion.

I installed this unit on an 18 ft. Lund and used in mostly fresh water and a few trips in the shallows at the cape. I sold the boat and kept the trolling motor. The best part about it is you wear the remote on your wrist (the size of a watch) and steer the boat. You are not stuck to the bow latched onto a handle. It really depends on your budget, this unit cost me around $1000 or so new with the top of the line batteries. I wll try to attach a few pics. It is in mint condition and well cared for and the 70 lbs pushed my fully loaded boat at 2000 lbs no problem. If you are interested in talking send me an e-mail. I am in the market for a 24 ft boat and will not be able to use.
