Hi All -
Anyone running a 300 Yamaha , I'm looking at a leftover 2005 300 HPDI . I heard Yamaha had problems with these and wanted to check if anyone has any experience with them ? It would come with 3 year warranty and the 3 year extended warranty on top of that...

Thanks

From what I hear as long as you get all of the SW updates the motor should run just fine.

Just keep in mind resale when you eventually sell her down the road. How many people will be in line to get a discontinued 300hp hpdi vs. those looking for a 4 stroke?

I am running a 2004 that I purchased as a left over last summer. I only have eighty hours on it so far. I had to have the idle adjusted after about ten hours. That seems to be pretty normal from what I hear. Other than that it has run great. One thing I found out the hard way was that you cannot run it out of the water on muffs. It will not run properly without any back preasure and the overheat alarm will sound. That was new to me coming from an older I/O and the manaul does not warn you. So far I am happy with it.

I would not hesitate to purchase that engine. Yes there were some issues with '03 and early '04 300s, but from what I have heard these engines have been very good since then.

Run, Forrest, run ...

That said, I have no experience with that puppy, but I personally wouldn't buy one - upgrades done or not. Too many people on The Hull Truth just could never get them to run right ... some ran OK regardless of the updates, and some just never ran.

I would also do an in-depth search on thehulltruth about this engine....I'm sure there's enough reading material to keep you busy until the F300 comes out.....

Yamaha has dropped this engine from its production line due to all the problems they had with it. I have seen 2 new 33' boats for sale at a local dealer just so the owners could get away from the 300/275 HPDI's. I would reccomend you not buy it!

More bad news on them, unfortunately, see here. (http://www.thehulltruth.com/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=109978&posts=3)

If you really want a 300hp, buy the Suzuki. In Powerboat Report testing, a twin-screw large CC got better fuel efficiency with twin 300hp Suzis than twin 250hp Hondas. I hear the street price is ~ $18K.

Dale, that post you linked to at THT seems like a bit of a troll, it's "flynnman22"'s first and only post and why is he making the posting supposedly a month and a half after the incident took place?

I don't know where people are getting the information that the 3.3 liter 300 HPDI is no longer being produced, my sources tell me that they are still in production and being shipped every day.

I agree, the big block Suzuki 4-stroke engines are getting rave reviews but m16483 was asking about the 300 HPDI.

There used to be a bunch of them around here but everyone got rid of them because they had too many issues. On top of that it really does not put out all that much Hp.

Attached is a photo of a boat a dealer set up to use all his products in an SKA Tourn last year.

The motor in the middle puts out the most HP and the other two were close but well below the middle.

My buddy has had huge issues with his 05' and didn't do enough research to know better....there are too many other good choices and the 250 and 300 HPDI's have had MAJOR issues!! This would be a crap shoot at best...I think the above advice is great. Do a search on the hull truth on these engines and then make your decision. Good luck. Also, some dealers are doing everything they can to unload these...be careful out there!
