Well when a four leaf spring decides to drop three of it's leaves, you know it's time for a little sweat equity. I have never replaced springs before (lots of hubs, bearings, tires and lights though) but as my mechanic said "it's not rocket science". First hour of day one was spent jacking the trailer up onto blocks and photographing everything I though might get hit with the grinder or saws-all. For the next day and a half I tried every trick I could come up with to get the rusted bolts off of either the frame or axle. Grinder wasn't too fun in a tight space and the saws-all was dancing all over the place. Finally, I had an epiphany. Slapped on a new blade, jammed it between the spring and the vertical supports and bared down. Less than an hour later I was through all four frame bolts, had dragged out the axle and ground through the remaining hardware. Two hours later and the whole rig was good as new.
Lesson learned:
"It's not rocket science" but not a walk in the park either.
