I am in the process of outfitting a kayak for fresh/salt fishing. I was looking at putting in a Garmin "GPSMAP 238 Sounder". Any one use this or familiar with it, or have a similar product that sells for under $500?

I have the magellan meridian marine hand held. No problems. It is water proof and held up quite well last season.
It is a great tool to have while kayaking, not just for safety but to increase your effectiveness. I use mine in combo with my fishfinder to stay in the strike zone--it makes is very easy to do repeat drifts.
