Anyone out there with this motor ever have this happen?

To make a short story out of it. I brought it in to have some preventive work done on it...change the impeller, thermostat and plugs. I receive a phone call telling me that I need a new, and I could be spelling it wrong, what is called a "stater". What the.....is that I ask? Once I was told that it was needed I agreed. I am not mechanically smart so who am I to question. That will be $360!

OK. Just when I accept that I get another call saying I need a new tachometer. What? It was working fine last fall. They want $260! I tell them thanks but not thanks. I don't need one. 1 hour later another call. I need a "rev limiter"! What the......!! That's 65! From what they said I can't live without that so I agree to that.

I can't understand how at the end of last season all was fine and I bring it in for some simple stuff and it seems like everything is going wrong! I'm starting to feel like things are mysteriously starting to break.

Anyone out there with this motor have these issues or know if the issues mentioned are known issues with this motor? I'm pretty frustrated with the situation and am not sure if I should be. I know there are things that go wrong with motors but when the motor was running flawlessly last time out and now it appears that the winter rats have gotten into it and had a field day.

Any input, bad or good, would be greatly appreciated.

I know we aren't supposed to flame anyone but it would be great to somehow have a ranking of reputable dealers. I have a fifteen HP outboard. Couple of years ago I brought it into Bibeau's Marine in Dartmouth. I wanted the motor winterized and the impeller replaced. I figured all the time I spent at Monomoy the impeller was probably shot. While I'm shootin the breeze with a friend the technician pulls out the part and shows me that there are no signs of wear or cracking. I am looking at him during his explanation and all I can think is how many dealers would have charged me for the work whether they replaced the part or not. Having a dealer you can trust is a wonderful thing.

Stators can fail and when they do, they can take down and ruin a whole host of related electrical items on the motor. Tachs, rev limiters, optical eyes, regulators and/or rectifiers, powerpacks ... and so on.

Have them replace the stator and rev thingy, but change out the tach yourself. If you didn't have an hour meter on it, you can get a tach for $40, and pay more too. Unless of course this is a multi-function tach with warning lights ... then yes, that could be expensive.

Not knowing the dealer ... you actually could be lucky they caught it before it runied many other expensive parts.
