I have been in search for a good fly rod holder for a 20' cc. Does anyone have any suggestions? I can not seem locate any that appear to secure the rod very well.

Thanks in advance.

I was searching for fly rod holders a while ago and started this thread:

I can highly recommend the I-Fly rod holders. I have 2 of the "doubles" mounted to the sides of my console (20' CC). Easy to use, Well built, Service was great and the price is very competitive.

Ditto on the I-Fly's. I have a pair on my boat -- seven years and still holding up.

I can't go vertical because of the t-top so for horizontal storage I have the white poly horizontal 4 rod rack under each gunnel.

PRO- They're cheap & you can cram a lot of rods into them.

CON - The rod tips are exposed, reels bang into each other, lines can get tangled at the worst times.

I'm working on leaving one U on the bracket for a spin rod & mounting 3 PVC tubes so the rods will be protected. Installing rocket launchers on the t-top so the majority of non- fly rods can go up there and if necessary in the open U left on the rack. Can then carry 6 - 8 fly rods rigged & ready.

Good luck,

Roop

If you are looking for vertical storage on the console you have plenty of good advice here already. If you prefer under-the-gunnel storage--and if your boat design allows it--the poly racks with bungee retainers and hook-like cradles that stack three or four rods high and are sold at the boat stores work fine if you space them properly (you'll have to have mounting blocks glassed into the interior sides of your hull or order them if it's a new boat).

If you go this route and the curvature of your hull is such that the rods scrape against the interior, you may want to line the contact area with thin foam pads. And to lessen reels rattling, use neoprene or padded reel pouches. If you space the rack cradles the right distance apart, so you can store alternating rods with reels sitting both fwd and aft, you can hold an amazing number of outfits safely out of harm's way.

Anyone who wants to take me out on their boat......I'd be happy to hold a few extra rods :)

I have used the Bluewater holders whch work well...except, the concept of using zip ties (which they come with) is not a good one. You will typically need to use real hardware to attach the holders to whatever you are using. I attached them to the rocket launchers on my t-top by using a longer stainless steel bolt through the bottom hole and through the rocket launchers (replacing the one that was there) and then using a stainless steel pipe clamp around the top of the Bluewater and the rocket launcher with a couple of wraps of electrical tape around the rocket launcher to protect it. I drilled two small holes in the back of the top of the bluewater so i could feed the pipe clamp through. Sounds a bit complicated but it was easy and holds really well.

I have the white poly horizontal rod holders under the gunnels. I fit 1 foot long lengths of foam pipe insulation around rods to fill gap between holder and rod - works great - no rattles or rod damage. A neoprene reel cover protects the reel.

I just put two sets of Lees rod holders on my boat. I have them in a verticle position...but I guess they could be used horizontal under a gunnel or a T Top. They look sharp.
Previously I had fabricated PVC holders out of Sched. 40 pipe. They worked OK but looked kinda clunky. ;) ;)

Last year I bought a fly-rod holder from Bass Pro Shops. It's similar to the I-Fly holders except is allows you to turn the reels so that they are parallel to the mounting surface. So for me on my center console with a vertical mount you can turn the reels so that they are flush with the center console so that you don't bang in to them with your shins. It's not perfect some of my larger reels do not turn a full 90 degrees, but works reasonably well anyhow.

I was a little skeptical of the suction mounts, but for $30 bucks I figured I'd give it a try, hell I've spent alot more than that on beer! Well they have never fallen off. In fact one day after a long 100mile highway tow home I realized I forgot to take the holder off at the ramp. To my delight the holder was still firmly attached to the console when I got home.

Unfortunately Bass Pro Shops doesn't have the picture of them on line, but you can search for this part# 38-421-994-01 . I got the double and am happy with it.

I just installed a RodSaver by O'Neill Mfg. <rodsaver.net> It's a foam and 2" wide nylon and velcro belt that holds 6 rods for abot $15. I had the non-foam model on another boat and liked it. Hope this one satisfies as well.

...another vote for I Fly rod holders....or make something similar on your own.

I made 2 triple IFly modifieds for my center console as well. I figured there were just going to be times when I'd want the option to go vertical or horizontal.

Being a DIY kind of person, I just got a keyhole saw and cut down the existing slits in the spinning rod holders. I then got these neat little velcro straps from Boater's world taht have an adhesive mount on them, and attached them to the rear at the top. When the rod is in, you just wrap it around the rod and holder to secure it. It's easy to put them in and take them out, and it's worked so far.
