I am attending Bridgewater State College and have all of my fly fishing equipment here. I really have an itch to fish, but not sure where to go. If anyone can help me find a place that is within 20-30 minutes of Bridgewater (zip- 02325) it would really help. Also could you please include what kind of flies to use and any other help is welcome.

Thank You
Tom

Redman,

You have a ton of options on that list. Do some exploring and have some fun...maybe stop by a flyshop and get some tips --127-3-

We all have our favorite spots etc...but I ain't going to broadcast mine over the internet for all of the world to see! They're getting a little overcrowded already (#$119)

I understand you don't want to give away your fav. spots, I am not asking that. I am asking for some spots I could go and flyfish. I don't have a car here so I have to borrow one, and that is why i can not explore to much. Thank you for your input

Tom,
Most of the people here are very careful about posting fishing site. Something like 70 people have viewed this thread already and though they might want to help you no one wants to tell 70 strangers about a site they like.

Maybe someone can PM Tom, with a little more spacific info!

I would but I don't know the area.

Good for you Conveyor Man!!! It is nice to see someone step up and help out a fellow TAXPAYER / Fisherman and not be so greedy with "THEIR" secret spots.....oh yeah, I forgot the state stocked the ponds, rivers and streams just for them so other people dont have "THEIR" fish taken!

Come on fellas....

I have no idea where to fish near BSC as I am from the Merrimack Valley.

Thank you guys, like I said I'm not looking to steal someone's spot, I really just want to fish. PM me if you don't want to post it. I am at college for another month then I will be fishing the swift in western mass where I live. So you probably won't ever see me at your spot. Again thank you for your time.

Hey Lurch: EVERY body of water in the state that was stocked with "your" tax dollars is on that list. It's no secret. To each his own but I find part of the adventure of flyfishing is exploring and discovering new water. I guess you do not agree with that...and don't really care --125-3

But thanks for sharing with such an insightful post anyway.

Redman, you might want to pick up the Trout Unlimted "Guide to Fly-Fishing in Massachussetts". It's an invaluable source of information/access points/etc. and the small price of the book goes to the protection and restoration of local watersheds.

Peace.

They carry it a local flyshops or you could visit one of the local Trout Unlimited websites like www.gbtu.org and email them for a copy. Worth
it's weight in gold and includes fly suggestions, seasonal info, etc.

Strat, I agree with you! I have learned to fish on my own by reading books and going on fishing adventures to uncharted waters. It just feels like some of the fisherman on this forum act like they own the fishing spots and get ****ed if someone else shows up on the same day they are there. There are many posts regarding "Lurkers" and it ****es me off to see people have MAJOR attitudes about people learning about "their" spots. There are other posts saying that "I fished at sopt X and there were 100 people there at the same time I was, my fishing spot is overcrowded". In my opinion that is BS.

I joined this site to talk about fishing and if we just chat with the headers "the fishing was good last night" this site would be boring!

I also enjoy sharing the joy I get from fishing with others so when a friend of mine asks what he needs to do to catch fish I do not tell him to "We all have our favorite spots etc...but I ain't going to broadcast mine over the internet for all of the world to see! They're getting a little overcrowded already" as you have done in your previous post!

I like the saying "MINE"...your killing me!! Do you own your own pond because then I understand why you can say "my spots"

I'm new to FF myself... I have no spots that I want to keep for myself. Pick a pond and go...there have been more than a few days where the skunk got the best of me. Most of the stocked ponds will give up fish. If you want a nice fish or just more than a few I can tell you where I catch fish, you may have more or less success. I started with the web site I posted. I'm no great fisherman and my spots are no secret. They came from the web site I posted...good luck.

hi tom,

i wish that i had more information for you about bridgewater. i live north of boston and, unfortunately, know of more places up this way. i was reading through the responses to your post and am, frankly, disheartened by most of them. guys, the kid is in college and has limited transportation...throw him a bone. i understand perfectly well how crowded things get but look at it this way. when you found "your spot" don't you think that someone else may have already been fishing there for years and is ticked off that you are there? but it is ok because you found it on your own? i spend a lot of time fishing in maine, riding for hours to get to some favorite places. sure i get disappointed when others are there but they have just as much right to be there as me.

tom, the following link lists waters stocked with trout in ma.

http://www.state.ma.us/dfwele/dfw/dfw_trout_waters.htm#NORTH

i didn't see any in bridgewater, but taunton which is close has some. i love fishing for trout, but if you are jonesing for fish, go really light to any of the area ponds that are loaded with sunfish and have a blast.

good luck and let me know how you make out.

charlie

tom,

beaver brook in east bridgewater was stocked the week of april 5th. have fun.

Careful gentlemen, on your posts,

Some of the lack of posts may be due to people not wanting to share, but on listed stocked ponds/rivers it is more due to the number of persons that fish that area. The best suggestion was to check the mass site on stocked ponds and rivers. Find one close and give it a try. One of those listed is the Indian Head River in the Duxbury/Marshfield area. It is a tributary to the North river. Check it out on the mass site and locate it with a map book. In may it has trout in the day time and it is a popular shad spot at nite. If you have never caught a shad, give it a shot, they give a great fight on a flyrod or spin rod with 8-10# test.

Thanks guys for all the help, I will hopefully check out beaver brook sometime next week if I can find a way there. Also I have shad fished before, being from Western Ma I usually will start fishing the conn. river for them nowhopefully when I'm done with this semester they will be still running.

Thanks Again
Tom

Hey Tom,

I live over in Halifax and there's some great bass fishing in a lot of the ponds
right around the area. The "Nip" right over on rte 104 is a great place to fish or Monponsett pond on rte 58 in Halifax. There are many other ponds and lakes to fish in the area. Some great bass fishing in Taunton in Massasoiett
state park. Palmer river stocks trout. Trout are stocked in Easton, Mansfield and a lot of other places within 30 minutes.

Someone mentioned the Indian Head river...it actually flows through Hanson and Pembroke and joins up with 3rd Herring brook to form the North River.
You can easily access the river from W. Elm street in Pembroke, Look on mapquest for directions. Would say its about 30 from the college. You can fish for trout or try fishing for shad in late april through May.

Good luck

You're closest to "The Nip", right on Rte 104 if you like Bass. After that, B'water itself doesn't have too many good fishing spots. You'll have to find a buddy with a car who loves to fish to help you out of town...

I never had much luck in Beaver Brook as a kid...

Halifax is loaded with good Bass ponds, as is Carver, Lakeville and Pembroke. Plymouth, right down Rte 27, has many, many trout locations.

Myles Standish State Park has a couple trout ponds and isn't very far from B'water. take rte 18 to 495 south, take exit 2 and take a left off the ramp. Follow about 5-6 miles and look for the lil-itty-bitty brown sign on the right that says to take the next right for the park (I can't remember the street name). (#$119)

When you get into the park, stop at the headquarters and ask about Fearing's Pond and trout fishing.

You can get all the details you need here:

http://www.state.ma.us/dem/index.htm

Good Luck.

If you want only trout then go to Plymouth (Long / Little) both have directions on the State's web site. If you just want to catch fish than go to the Nipp in Bridgewater off of 104 just pass the Rt 24 overpass. You can catch plenty of bass there. The pond is also shallow so you can wade most of it. Also there is Carver pond on summer street which is less than a mile from the college. This is also a warm water pond and not as good as the Nipp but you could walk there. I'd stay away from Beaver Brook I never had much luck there. You also have the Taunton River running through Bridgewater I fish that for the first time last year and caught striper as far up as Bridgewater. This is also warmwater so you won't catch trout. This river is very protect on both side so access is not good. If you have a canoe it is great for fly fishing otherwise a back cast is almost impossible. This river also drops off immediately so you can not wade. One spot where you might be able to back cast is Camp Titicut in Bridgewater (Beech Street). This is a park owned by the town and has public parking just walk up the trail and the river will be on your left about 150 yard up. You would most likely be better off with a spinning rod here. This is one off the few spot where you can wade but with the water as high as it is now they may not be possible. Don't let the brown color of the water fool you. This running is being looked at by the Fed Gov to be assigned as a Federal Wild and Scenic River. I could be wrong here but a recent internet seach showed that the Westfield River is currently the only river in Mass labeled by the Feds as Wild and Scenic so you can see the company it would be in.
