What do people recommend for handheld GPS. I would like to use it primarily for boating (16' whaler and sea kayaking). Secondary use would be for hunting. I was thinking either the garmin map76 or magellan sportrak marine.

I have a garmin 48 about 4 years old and it works great! I swear by it, gotten me out of a lot of foggy situations unscratched. I had one problem with it but called the company and they had me mail it out and sent it back to me in less than 2 weeks. Not a bad deal since it cost nothing to me. I was actually thinking of upgrading to a color model as the eyes are not getting any better and the color is much easier to read. Overall a nice piece of equipment and definitely a must have on the water.
good luck
The Garmin Map76 with Bluechart software has worked fine for me.

The Garmin Map76 with Bluechart software has worked fine for me.I have not actually used others (like Magellen etc.) on the water(just played with them at shows), but Here's another vote for the Garmin 76 map with Blue chart.
SamRiley has one and brings it Kayaking all the time. The thing is great!! Waterproof and floats. Makes it really easy to record kayak trips and find rock piles.

I've had an older Garmin GPS-12 I've used for years, both in salt-water and the woods. I've been very happy with it, get the Mapsource software for editing your routes and waypoints, worth every penny.

I have a GPSMAP 76 that is seven months old and loaded with blue chart for cape and islands, that i'm selling. write ackvor@yahoo.com for info. I hope this does not violate the guidelines for posting, i just thought i may be able to save a reel-timer some $ if he is interested in this model. If this post is in violation please let me know.
Thanks

I could be a little late in replying but I have the Garmin GPS Map 76 and love it. If you like this unit it's now available in color. If it's not out yet it will be any day now. --127-3-

I also have a Garmin eTrex Legend that I use as back up to a 188c aboard. You can load the BlueChart details to it, but it's REALLY hard to see the detail. Makes a great second unit of for shore use. Has a recording barometer and is easy to up/download.

I've got something called the SPORT TRAC PRO by magellin. Its a hand held unit has a map and compass and a whole bunch of other stuff. its very easy to store "Way Points". I consider it my starter GPS. I picked it up at COSTCO for cheap money & it really did help me out...but I wouldn't recommend it to anyone else (I think there are better products out there). This year I was looking at something a little easier to read and I was thinking about a new unit from Garmin called the GPSmap 60 c. it looks pretty slick and I almost bought it. I'm just checking to see how much the S/W will cost. The Magellin S/W won't work with the Garmin unit so another mapping S/W package would have to be purchased.
