Anyone interested in getting together next weekend for some icefishing on the cape?
The cape ponds have ice and their season tends to be short so I figure strike while the iron's hot, hrmm that may not be the best metaphor.

We could do something like Lovells pond which has bass, perch, and some trout or we could do Peter's pond, trout, salmon, smallies, or some pond that is excusively bass, pickeral ,perch
Grills , sauages, fried perch, maybe goose sandwiches.
Catch and release into the grill.--126-3-
Saturday???

Back to work today, I discovered that my seven graders are responsible for running a concession stand saturday morning.
Options Have ice clave saturday on your own.
Have ice clave on sunday
Have ice clave on following saturday.
Opinions?

.definitely there...I have an extended family birthday party the 24th, so the following Sat or Sunday is best for me...I have extra tilts if there is the need- they are oldies but goodies...I would be rippin down from Central Mass for the weekend so if shiners are light down there I can bring extra or anything else ya might need...might even make up a 6 alarm venison chile...or a stew- preferences?

..any of you guys ever fish Mystic Lake/Middle Pond? I was thinking of hitting that the non-clave day- years ago we fished it and it was one of those days that you couldn't get more than 3-4 tilts up for the first coupla hours- chop, bait and boing !! until 10 am...

maybe if ya nice I'll make some of my famous pickeral pancakes....mmmmmmm- stick to ya ribs!

Ok it looks like we will have the official Ice Clave on saturday Jan 31. The way the temperatures are forecasted, it would take one heck of a heat wave to melt the cape ice by then.

....mmmmmmm- stick to ya ribs!
Inside or outside of ribs?

Ok this gives us longer time for planning food.
Venison Chili sounds great(#$112)
It will go well with my marinated goose steak sandwiches.

and the pickeral pancakes will augment the Macperch sandwiches.

I assume we will have a grill, charcoal I hope. I have some Pheasant Sausage to bring!

I just had some Pickeral Pancakes today, so I'll pass on them.

Ps. Never been ice fishing before!! At least intentionally!!

I will bring a charcoal grill- hopefully we will be somewhere that will allow a fire...

what do we have for pond options? On or near Cape?

Long Pond in Plymouth is close to Rt 3 and has bass, trout and I think salmon. I think it's an easy place to get to for the non-south shore guys. But I'll go where ever the current take this. :)

31st ... I'm in, ten-year old's birthday not withstanding.

Just picked the dog up at the kennel and was making plans to hit the ice this weekend with a friend, when the lady behind the counter said she did very well this past weekend at Spectacle using mumichogs. Many many trout, she said.

I'm looking forward to this big event. Since I've never been ice fishing, I have a few questions.

1. What is the legal size for ice?
2. Is it really hard to get flies in the hole?
3. Since ice floats, why is a hole required?
4. What kind of bait do ices eat? Water?
5. How many ices can you keep this year?
6. Is it hard to gaff em`?

:D

..I will defer to wherever the group decides, but we should think about Mashpee- Wakeby- 15 species of fish available and the potential for a monster...everyone has their favorite- what are some of yours?

Bob Parsons

I like the idea of Mashpee/Wakeby pond lots of area to try.

1. What is the legal size for ice?
3" unless your sharing then a minimum of 5"

2. Is it really hard to get flies in the hole?
Depends on the size of the hole lying face down on hole often works

3. Since ice floats, why is a hole required?
Ice floats, fish don't

4. What kind of bait do ices eat? Water?
icicles, ice cream, icing from you cake

5. How many ices can you keep this year?
all you can carry, but they don't keep long in the car

6. Is it hard to gaff em`?
yes, they are hard and slippery

I say we play it by ear and see what the weather brings. Anyplace with a good lee side out of the wind will work for me .... plus fish of course.

and I were driving past a pond Sunday.

4yo: "What are those guys doing on the ice"

Me: "They're ice fishing..."

4yo: "Oh..."
<brief pause>
4yo: "Is that where frozen fish comes from?"

31st is good. I will try and make it. I have tip ups and an augur. I also have a little Webber grill that might be helpful. Goose steak sandwiches sound good. Not so sure about the pickerel pancakes though.

..good idea on taking the weather into account, Dave....

..on ice fishing; some years ago I was touring a manufacturing facility and noticed an operator with a tee-shirt that read " 2nd Annual Polish American Ice Derby" and "July 4, 1994"...

I had to ask how they had an ice fishing derby in July- having married a woman born in Poznan I had my suspicions, but that's another story...

..it seems like this club supplies blocks of ice with a hole bored in them for twenty bucks a chance- you buy as many chances as you wish...

then you set your tilt thru the hole, tether it with string, and float it out with your set...

you are done fishing when the ice melts, or the bar closes, whichever happens first...

Hit Lovell's Point in Cotuit today with the wife, kids, nephews and friends. Six tip-ups between two licenses, three jigging rods and not a flag or a bump for our troubles. But ... ice skates saved the afternoon. Everytime it got too cold to bear it I'd take a fast lap around the pond, come back, eat another hot dog, down another hot chocolate, and drill a new hole.

Doesn't get much better than that in the depths of winter.

Looking forward to next weekend.

Ray,

Pheasant sausage? I've made some real good pheasant sausage in my time. Did you make yours?
Hell, I might even try to make the ice clave. I'd even bring my two black dogs. I'd love to see them bite Luke in his fat A$$! --125-3

I didn't make the sausage. I got it from Addeville East Farm where I hunt from time-to-time. It's very good. I have a pound or more left that I'll bring.

Bob, if you "accidently" spill coffee on Luke, it could get quite ugly --123-3 . Welcome back and sorry to hear about the car mishap!

Bill,

Thanks for the idea. :brow Forget spilling coffee on Luke, I'll dump it on him in that case! --123-3

Ray, I have a hunt booked at Addieville in two weeks. Any chance you'll be around?

Ray
01-27-2004, 10:08 AM
I haven't hunted there all season. I usually go a few times per season, including a European. Been traveling a lot for work lately. Cutting into my personal life. Headed to Wisc (AGAIN!!!!!) tomorrow. This better end by April!!!

What are you hunting? Put a few speedsters out there to keep you on your toes!!

Always thought Mystic Lake was a little too polluted for ice fishing?
